Everybody's gotta learn somewhere. Bali is a great place to learn to surf. It attracts surfers of all levels from all over the world, but don't be intimidated, be stoked. There are waves with your name on them in these surf spots for beginner surfers.

      I'm sure you've heard of Kuta Beach. It's the closest, most well-know beach in Bali. The convenience of this beach makes it the best place to start your journey as a newbie surfer. If you're staying in Bali central, you can walk to Kuta Beach, rent a surfboard, and learn the basics on your own in a day. You will be amongst a lot of beginners though, but that's okay, there's plenty of space and time to surf at Kuta Beach.

      Dreamland Beach is one of the more popular surf locations in Bali. It has an epic viewpoint which attracts many tourists who may or may not be interested in surfing. It is a good idea to go there first and have a look at the wave conditions and crowds before you rent a surfboard. Dreamland Beach also has a well-rated surf school if you're looking for lessons.

  • Medewi Beach, Indonesia

      Medewi Beach has the smallest waves (2-5 feet) but the longest left-handed point break on the island. This beach has 2 surf spots to try out, but be aware, there are some rocks so if you're just starting out, make sure to get comfortable on your board before you head out too far. Best time to go is early morning (like most good surf spots).

      Batu Bolong Beach has fat, easy-going waves that are perfect for beginners and longboarders. The waves can range from 2-10 feet but seldom get bigger than 7 feet. This beach is a really fun place for first-timer surfers and beginner groups.

      Balian Beach is a beautiful location with waves that range from 2-12 feet so it does attract all levels of surfers. There's plenty of room, plenty of waves and the vibe is very relaxed here. It's best to go early morning before 11AM as there can be a strong onshore wind in the afternoon.

      Have no fear of a wipeout at Kedonganan Beach. This beginner surf spot has a soft sand floor and is ideal for newbies.
